Magnetic fields, winds and X-rays of massive stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster
نویسندگان
چکیده
In massive stars, magnetic fields are thought to confine the outflowing radiativelydriven wind, resulting in X-ray emission that is harder, more variable and more efficient than that produced by instability-generated shocks in non-magnetic winds. Although magnetic confinement of stellar winds has been shown to strongly modify the mass-loss and X-ray characteristics of massive OB stars, we lack a detailed understanding of the complex processes responsible. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between magnetism, stellar winds and X-ray emission of OB stars. In conjunction with a Chandra survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster, we carried out spectropolarimatric ESPaDOnS observations to determine the magnetic properties of massive OB stars of this cluster.

متن کاملX-ray emission and the incidence of magnetic fields in the massive stars of the Orion Nebula Cluster
Magnetic fields have been frequently invoked as a likely source of variability and confinement of the winds of massive stars. To date, the only magnetic field detected in O-type stars are those of θ Ori C (HD 37022; Donati et al. 2002), the brightest and most massive member of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), and HD 191612 (Donati et al. 2006). Notably, θ Ori C is an intense X-ray emitter, and t...
متن کاملA Simultaneous Optical and X - ray Variability Study of the Orion Nebula Cluster . II . A Common Origin in Magnetic Activity
We present a statistical analysis of simultaneous optical and X-ray light curves, spanning 600 ks, for 814 pre–main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster. The aim of this study is to establish the relationship, if any, between the sites of optical and X-ray variability, and thereby to elucidate the origins of X-ray production in PMS stars. In a previous paper we showed that optical a...
متن کاملDiscovery of two magnetic massive stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster: a clue to the origin of neutron star magnetic fields?
The origin of the magnetic fields in neutron stars, and the physical differences between magnetars and strongly magnetised radio pulsars are still under vigorous debate. It has been suggested that the properties of the progenitors of neutron stars (the massive OB stars), such as rotation, magnetic fields and mass, may play an important role in the outcome of core collapse leading to type II SNe...
متن کاملChandra X - ray Observatory Study of the Orion Nebula Cluster and BN / KL Region
About 1000 X-ray emitting young pre-main sequence (PMS) stars distributed in mass from ∼0.05 M⊙ brown dwarfs to a ∼ 50 M⊙ O star are detected in an image of the Orion Nebula obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is the richest field of sources ever obtained in X-ray astronomy. Individual X-ray luminosities in the Orion Nebula Cluster ra...
